I used Village Cleaners to clean and perserve my wedding dress. The place is really nice, clean and the staff is easy to talk to. They explained the difference between the different wedding cleaning options. You'll need to decide if you want your dress cleaned, hung, pressed and/or preserved. I'm sure I did standard cleaning and preeserving and I'm pretty sure the prices were reasonable -- it was definitely more than cleaning a suit and definitely less than the cost of my alterations (which were done elsewhere, but Village Cleaners does alterations also).
Overall Village Cleaners is nice. Sometimes they are a bit pricey for everyday items, but I always use them for nicer pieces, because I know they will take care of them. When it came to my wedding dress, the price was better than I expected.
Regarding the comment on timing: It seems like they just clean the dress, press it and put it in an acid free box (or two). I think you are supposed to get it re-cleaned and preserved every 10 years so if it hasn't yellowed, I don't think it is ever too late to get it cleaned.

I was going to title this review "eating my own dog food, and loving it", but I wasn't sure anyone would get it. If you haven't noticed, I'm one of the wild-eyed lunatics responsible for Judy's Book, so I always get excited when the idea works the way I think it should.
Case in point: my wife and I are in the middle of a real estate transaction, and one of the issues we've been working to resolve is the resubmission of a septic easement that was misfiled by the previous owners (thrilling stuff, I know). Anyway, turns out that this filing requires my signature to be witnessed by a notary. This is not something I need every day, and I don't really know where to start looking.
My answer -- and what I mean by "eating my own dog food" -- is to rely on Judy's Book. Getting help from my local community (and offering help in return) is what Judy's Book is all about. And getting a recommendation for an out-of-the-ordinary need -- like finding a notary -- is a great test of how well Judy's Book works.
So I posted a question two days ago on the Seattle site, asking for referrals for a notary in North Seattle. And nothing happens. I wait a day, then a day and a half, and I'm starting to be a little disappointed. And then, out of the blue, from a new member I've never heard of who isn't a friend of anyone I know, I get this very specific recommendation for Notary One. Turns out the guy who recommended them went to college with the founder, and they're a new notary service that makes house calls.
So far so good, right? But what if Notary One turns out not to be that great. So I send an email to Scott Krager, the president and founder, asking him how his service works. Minutes later I get a reply, and (a) Scott's as nice as he could be, (b) a big part of his service is that he comes to you (and not the other way around), and (c) he's available TODAY and will meet me in a couple of hours.
Now I'm really getting excited, because this is EXACTLY how I want Judy's Book to work for everyone. And to top it all off, Scott shows up precisely on time, he notarizes my document, and he tells me about his business - which is a startup itself, and a great idea. So not only do I get my business done, I meet a really interesting person who I never would have met if it hadn't been for Judy's Book.
So anyway, sorry for the long rant, but I just love it when this idea works - and it's starting to work. And if you need a great notary who comes to you, call Scott - he's a super-nice guy and he'll do a great job.

G T did a very professional job on a video transfer that I needed (PAL with copy-protection to NTSC). It was just a few dollars more than the Indian grocery store that bungled the job the first time I tried to have it done, and they did a perfect job. Their price was much cheaper than some of the other places around town that I contacted first, too.

After calling other jewelry shops in Seattle, Annie at Magnolia Custom Jewelry was the place to really come through.
In stereotypical style, I decided very last-minute to surprise my wife on Mother's Day by repairing her engagement ring that she hadn't worn in over a year. With only a couple of days to go, I called around to find out that many jewelry shops don't do their own repairs...they would have to "send it out." With no time to have the piece travel to & fro, I finally spoke with Annie who, after hearing my wishful story, said she would be willing to put me to the top of her list and try to have the job done before the Sunday holiday. After I dropped off the ring, she called her suppliers and personally picked up the non-standard gold for the repair, and completely finished the job in just over 24 hours. Oh, and it looked fabulous!

I would highly recommend that you take your clothes elsewhere to be altered. I needed a bridesmaid dress altered, and she not only charged me three times what the other bridesmaids ended up paying, but the dress still did not fit! When I took it back in a few days later she said she would fix it but would have to charge me more. Very rude, expensive, and poor work done here.
