I am a "lifer" at Lakeside, meaning I entered in grade 5 and stayed thru highschool. Lakeside school no doubt, prepared me for college. Some teachers were very good, others were mediocre, and a few were milking their tenure for all its worth. But all things considered, it was a good place to go to school.

This pool leaves a lot to be desired. The water is too cold for most babies, it smells strongly of chlorine, and there are few amenities for changing babies' diapers. As for the swim classes, they fall into the "average" category. Is it too much to ask for someone to sing a song other than "Tugboat, tugboat, move to fast...tugboat, tugboat move to slow..." or wheels on the bus? Many of the Seattle swim classes we've tried need a boost. A little originality and a more varied song list would be a huge improvement.

Evans pool offers very average swim classes for infants/toddlers. The teachers are sweet and obviously qualified, but don't necessarily have experience with children. The songs sung are the usual tunes...a little variety would be nice.
There is one change table in the women's changing room, so you are likely to change your child on the cold wet floor or on a bench. There is one family bathroom inside the pool itself.

Lifesaver for Working Parents of Sick Kids

More
You've got a major presentation at work, your spouse has personnel problems to deal with and now your child has come down with a mild fever. Or worse yet - your small person has come down with the chicken pox. You stayed home the first couple of days while they were feeling the most miserable but now the little tyke is running around like nothing's wrong except that they can't go back to school/childcare for two weeks and you're wondering how you're going to get any work done.
Now what? Sure, if it was life threatening, you'd have your priorities straight and stay home. But when those gray areas of a child's health bump up against strict childcare policies and a heavy-duty work schedule, there's only one truly satisfying answer if grandma's not available - the Virginia Mason sick child day care (technically known as Tender Loving Care - Childcare for mildly ill children).
Originally set up for Virginia Mason employees, they are now open to the general public on a space available basis and have a separate room specifically for kids with chicken pox. Some companies even offer subsidized access to VM TLC as a benefit - if I was still working in management, I'd insist on it.
TIP - call or check the website when you DON'T need the information so you understand what's involved and then keep a registration form on hand for the event you DO need their services once you've determined your being able to work is worth that much money for a limited period of time.

More
My wife and I have been touring daycare centers around Seattle for the past few months, in anticipation of our first child's arrival (in May). Over the weekend we heard a strong recommendation for La Escuelita, and have heard more good things as we started to look into it.
It's located in kind of an inauspicious location - under the Jiffy Lube and on the edge of the Office Depot parking lot, just north of U-Village. If you can get over that, though, everything else sounds great. The prices - around $900 a month for full-time - are significantly less than other centers we've seen; the program is bilingual (English / Spanish), if you're interested in early childhood language development; the staff is extremely warm and nuturing; and - most important for us - the parents we know whose kids attend absolutely love it.
If you're in the market for high-quality, cost-effective childcare in North Seattle, you should give La Escuelita a look.

More
NSCC Co-op Preschool programs provide parent and early education for families with children in the following age groups - infants, toddlers, "Pre-3's", and "3-5's".
Parents effectively run each of the 13 locations - everything from helping in the classroom to hiring teachers. Parents work 1 day per week in the classroom and also receive parent education from instructors.
The COOP system is also a great way to meet other families with children the same age as your kid(s).

Need downtown child care? Our friends love this place

More
I don't have first-hand experience with them, but my wife and I have been researching Seattle daycare centers for our own son, and several friends who work downtown have recommended Pike Market Child Care and Preschool (quite a mouthful, but that's what they're called).
It's a fully accredited center, offering both full-time and part-time care. They have a great diversity policy, and their pricing is on a sliding scale based on income - a great feature for young families who may be thinking they can't afford quality childcare
My understanding is that their waitlist is long, so if you're interested I'd encourage you to call soon to arrange a tour.
